Lawyer of yacht builder Bayesian fired after insane damage claim
On Friday, Tommaso Bertuccelli, a lawyer who worked with The Italian Sea Group (TISG), the builder of the superyacht Bayesian, filed a lawsuit against Lynch’s widow and crew members, for €222 million, for reputational damage.
The news was bizarre, and was consequently picked up by many international media outlets. Bertucelli allegedly made his claim after Giovanni Costantino, CEO of TISG, described the ship as “unsinkable” immediately after the sinking, claiming that a series of “indescribable, unreasonable mistakes” by the crew had led to the sinking.
Bertuccelli, who filed the lawsuit on Friday, claims that TISG has already lost business because of the sinking, including a well-known fashion house that withdrew plans to launch its brand on the company’s yachts.
Fired
Following initial reports of the lawsuit, TISG said it had not authorised the lawsuit and on Saturday afternoon immediately instructed lawyers to drop the case. A TISG representative said, “Italy’s Sea Group S.p.A. clarified it had instructed its lawyers – who had filed the subpoena on 20 September 2024 at the Termini Imerese court mentioned in the news in recent days – to withdraw the said subpoena on 21 September 2024 at 2.01pm by certified email. TISG also said it had fired Bertuccelli.
Self-interest
A source told MailOnline: “We first knew about this when the story surfaced in the Italian media and it was then picked up by international publications. That TISG has filed a lawsuit is not true. The lawyer in question, who has been working with us for eight years, acted entirely out of self-interest.
He had been instructed to look into the matter legally on behalf of TISG, but for some reason he decided to file a case that had not even been seen, approved and signed by the board. He has now been dismissed and is no longer working for us.”
