Vrijbuiter getting ahead

The sustainable barge Vrijbuiter is embarking on another full season, with emission-free cargo sailing, a summer writing course on board and harbour concerts. The Vrijbuiter can also be found at the Oerol festival.

Many special projects are happening on the Vrijbuiter. Among them, owners Wiebe and Suzan announce a new edition of the Sailing Writing Summer Course, and a very special sailing trip: ‘Italia a gonfie vele – Con Te Partirò’. This takes place after the Vrijbuiter transported a theatre group to Oerol with their sets and props.

After the return trip from Oerol, concerts and boat trips are organised by and with a group of Italian musicians in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute in Amsterdam: AcquAria Terrafuoco.

• On Tuesday 18 June, there will be a free concert at 7pm at the former NDSM shipyard in Amsterdam North.
• And on Friday 21 June, they will play a also free-access harbour concert at 17:00 in the old harbour/crane square in Zierikzee.

The trip between Amsterdam and Zierikzee can be sailed along. Gouda and Willemstad will be visited, and a cultural and entertainment programme has been set up along the way, with musicians and performers, storytellers and chefs who will present Italian culinary delights, performances and stories.

Cargo tours

On 30 May, the Vrijbuiter will load a cargo of wheat and flour in Zierikzee, after which the ship will depart for Willemstad. On 31 May, the journey continues to Middelharnis, where there will be a concert on deck in the afternoon. The following day, the ship will leave Middelharnis early to pick up guests in Willemstad, after which it will continue to Puttershoek to unload the cargo. Horse and cart will be ready there to transport the cargo further to the mills in Puttershoek. The journey continues along the standing mast route via Gouda to Amsterdam.

Sailing summer course

Last year, in collaboration with sailing publisher HetMoet and the Door de Wind foundation, the Slauerhoff Archipelago project took place, resulting in a beautiful booklet. From 11 to 16 August 2024, the second Sailing Writing Summer Course will take place aboard the Vrijbuiter. Novice writers can sign up to sail across IJsselmeer and Wadden with a team from HetMoet. Well-known writers and poets will come on board to give workshops. Novice writers are cordially invited to apply.
