First TOWT ship Anemos delivered

We have reported on the TOWT ships several times before. If you saw the ships under sail in pictures, those were artist impressions. Now it is real, the Anemos sails!

With a few months’ delay, the first of eight Phenix-class ships from the French company TOWT has been delivered and sailed to Le Havre, partly under sail. On 5 and 6 August, the Anemos sailed from the Piriou yard in Concarneau, Brittany, to her home port of Le Havre in Normandy. Little wind, but the sails were set anyway.

The Anemos (ἄνεμος, Greek for wind) is the first vessel of the ambitious venture TransOceanic Wind Transport (TOWT) to be delivered. Sister ship Artemis will follow by the end of this year and another six ships are on order. These are currently the largest newbuilds for which wind is the main source of energy for propulsion. They emit 90% less CO2 than traditional sea transport. More details about these ships can be found in our post of 30 April this year.

In Le Havre, the Anemos is loaded with mainly French luxury products: wine, cosmetics, spirits. As with Dutch Fairtransport, the business model is based on products with a ‘sustainable transport’ label, which consumers pay a little extra for. At TOWT, that label also gets the name of the first ship Anemos, plus the number of the voyage. In addition, a limited number of paying passengers can also sail along.

About 20 August, it departs for New York for the first time with products under the label ‘ANEMOS Voyage No 001’
