Neoliner Origin under sail for the first time
A part of the NEOLINE team had the chance to come aboard Neoliner Origin for its very first sea trials under sail.
Neoline’s 136 meter long largely wind-propelled ro-ro vessel has begun its first trials in the Marmara Sea, off the Turkish shipyard RMK Marine in Tuzla, where it was built.
After 3 days dedicated to engine and technical trials, it was time for the wind! Two intense days were spent to test various maneuvers & the operation of the sails. A highly emotional moment for the entire team. These sea trials provide an initial validation of the ship’s performance, and will be followed by a second phase in a few weeks’ time, just before delivery.
The ship is rigged with modern composite fabric jibs from OneSails International and ‘SolidSail’ mainsails by Chantiers de l’Atlantique. The team reports with excitement about the first results on performance of the systems and maneuvering potential.
About the picture above: on LinkedIn the team is clearly worried that we notice the smudging on the even-numbered segments of the SolidSails. “Don’t worry, the sails will be properly cleaned before delivery.”
Editorial note
As you can read in our earlier reports about the Neoliner Origin, the original plan was to make a first transatlantic crossing ‘mid 2025’. Since another 3 weeks of trials are in the planning, it looks like there some delay. However, this first Neoline ship is a prototype so we are neither surprised nor worried. On the booking site for passengers, reservations now can be made for October 2025.
