Café William gets its coffee beans by sailing ship

Sherbrooke (Quebec), Canada-based coffee roaster Café William is using sailboats to transport its coffee beans to North America.

The company’s first shipment by sailboat left Santa Marta, Colombia, on 18 December and was loaded with 72,000 kg of coffee beans and would take 20 days. It was part of the company’s commitment to sustainability and innovative mission to “always go beyond the limits”.

“It is a commitment to sustainable transport, but also to set a precedent for other players in the sector,” said Serge Picard, owner of Café William. “It was vital for us to find an alternative method of transporting coffee, which largely relies on fossil-fueled cargo ships. With an initial trip as proof of concept for the cargo sailboat, this is just the beginning of plans to start delivering zero-emission coffee.”

He explains that research has shown that Café William could see a reduction of around 1 tonne of transport-related CO2 per container thanks to the cargo sailboat. In the long term, the company hopes to expand the cargo sailboat’s transport capacity to 100% of the volume imported for Café William.
