MOL launches WASP ship made of green steel

A new multipurpose vessel is the first to use green steel and is equipped with eco-friendly technology, including an MGO engine and wind propulsion.

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has announced the delivery of the multi-purpose vessel Prima Verde. The vessel, operated by MOL Drybulk and owned by Daishin Shipping, was built at Onomichi Dockyard. According to MOL, the Prima Verde has several eco-friendly features and is the first ship of any type to use “green steel”1. It is also equipped with an engine that can run exclusively on marine gas oil (MGO) and a wind-assisted propulsion system.
MGO is considered high-quality oil and is much more expensive than marine diesel oil. MGO consists of distillates: constituents of crude oil that evaporate during distillation and later condense from a gas into a liquid.
The ship’s hull is made of JGreeX, a green steel material supplied by JFE Steel Corporation. This material significantly reduces carbon emissions by allocating emission reductions from the steelmaking process to selected steel products.

Dutch wind support

The vessel is powered by an engine from Japan Engine Corporation, designed to run exclusively on MGO. The engine has high combustion efficiency and lower carbon dioxide emissions compared to conventional alternatives. In addition, the vessel has two VentoFoil wind-assisted propulsion systems from Dutch manufacturer Econowind. MOL Techno-Trade, Ltd. acts as sales agent for these systems.
The vessel is in line with MOL Group’s commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2050, as outlined in MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2.
With an LOA of 129.66m and a DWT of 17,611, the Prima Verde sails under the Liberian flag.

1) JGreeXTM, a green steel material supplied by JFE Steel Corporation that significantly reduces CO2 emissions, in which CO2 emission reductions in the steel manufacturing process are allocated to optional steel materials, is used for the vessel’s hull.
