Sail cargo

New Dawn Traders comes up with sustainable coffee and olive oil

New Dawn Traders – a collective of charterers and ships using sailing vessels to transport sustainable products – has ordered fresh cargoes of olive oil, decaffeinated coffee and cane sugar. These are coming this way soon.

One of the NDT ships, the Grayhound Lugger, has left the Azores and is on its way to Pasajes, Spain, where olive oil will be loaded. At least that is the plan, because after a few difficult years, NDT is again buying cargo on a pre-order basis. Only what is pre-ordered is shipped, plus a little extra to sell on the quay and on its own website. To get the oil on board on time, early orders must be in by 3 May!
Orders for the 3-litre cans can be collected from the Grayhound when they call at the Gloucester Tall Ships Festival in late May and Falmouth in early June. For those unable to collect, orders will be delivered to their homes by post.

Panela

After an eventful time at sea, the Dutch lugger the Ide Min has finally arrived in Santa Marta, Colombia. The ship will soon load panela and coffee. Much of this is destined for a growing network of radical bakers and coffee roasters, but in order to reach the minimum order quantities from producers, the Ide Min is taking a fair amount of spare cargo, for which orders are also taken in advance. The panela is bought from an association of indigenous Arhuaco producer families in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Colombia. Buying from this community is an investment in their culture, which has lived in harmony with the land for thousands of years.
The loading port is at the foot of these mountains, which means minimal fuel mileage with trucks.
Panela is an unrefined whole cane sugar, typical of Latin America. It is a solid form of sucrose obtained by boiling and evaporating sugarcane juice. Panela is sold in many forms, including liquid, granular and solid blocks, and is used in food canning, as well as in confectionery, soft drinks, baking, vinegar, beer and wine.

Decaffeinated coffee

NDT partners with Cofinet to import their Popayàn decaffeinated coffee. Their unique, indigenous process to remove caffeine preserves the excellent quality of these beans so there is no compromise for a perfect cup (without the kick). There are very few special-quality decafs on the market, making a sea-delivered decaf an easy choice for roasters and anyone who loves coffee but can’t stand caffeine!
