Norwegian, Dutch and French cooperation for hybrid superyacht

Xplorer Yachts has announced a landmark partnership with Norse Shipyard to build Project MG, a 106-metre wind-assisted hybrid diesel-electric expedition yacht designed by VPLP Design.

The agreement was signed at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show by Paul Madden of Xplorer Yachts and Mustafa Süngü of Norse Shipyard.

Touted as the world’s first wind-assisted hybrid expedition yacht, Project MG is the flagship of Xplorer Yachts’ new “Wind Voyage” series, which will range from 80 to 120-metres. Developed over a two-year technical process with VPLP Design, the series blends high-performance naval architecture with sustainability-focused innovations. The vessel’s design is directed by the owner’s way of living.

“We are leading the way for a new generation of yacht owners to use wind propulsion in a powerful way to demonstrate their commitment to environmental responsibility,” commented Paul. “Project MG represents a greener, more cost-effective, and future-proof approach to global exploration.”

According to Xplorer Yachts, Norse Shipyard was chosen for its advanced engineering and new-build expertise. VPLP, best known for its high-performance racing multihulls and the 121-metre wind-powered cargo vessel Canopée, brings proven credentials in integrating OceanWings technology. During transatlantic voyages, Canopée has reduced fuel consumption by nearly 4,000 gallons per day, demonstrating the potential of wind-assisted propulsion.

The yacht will reduce reliance on fossil fuels by 30 to 50 percent, with the capability to cruise under sail alone at up to 12 knots, thanks to four OceanWings engines. Hybrid diesel-electric engines will provide additional propulsion up to 15 knots, while hydrogeneration under sail and integrated solar panels will allow for zero-emission operations and minimal underwater noise pollution.

“By following the same trade winds used by clipper ships and riding ocean currents, we will now cross oceans and explore distant shores with a vastly reduced carbon footprint – unmatched by Hydrogen, biodiesel or methanol,” explained Xplorer Yachts.

With an 8,000-nautical-mile range plus unlimited sail miles, the yacht is designed for global live-aboard family cruising. Features include a commercial helipad with hangar, expansive beach club, and accommodations tailored to long-range exploration in comfort and safety.

Project MG is scheduled for delivery in late 2027.
