Princess on tallship after world circumnavigation

Her Royal Highness Princess Margriet of the Netherlands visited Tallship Oosterschelde during the World Port Days in Rotterdam. Captain Jan-Willem Bos and shipowner-captain Gerben Nab gave the princess a tour of the three-masted vessel.

The historic three-masted schooner Oosterschelde sailed around the world for the past two years for a special voyage in the footsteps of Charles Darwin. In each port, young, talented scientists, so-called Darwin Leaders, from around the world came on board to conduct nature research with local conservationists.

In total, over 100 Darwin Leaders from 45 different countries participated in the project. The DARWIN200 Global Voyage is an initiative of British writer and biologist Stewart McPherson and the mission is supported by ambassadors Dr Jane Goodall, Dr Sylvia Earle and Dr Sarah Darwin. The 50-metre sailing ship returned to the Netherlands in July.

During the tour, Princess Margriet spoke to several crew members about their experiences on the voyage. Below deck and she was explained the research goals and results of the scientific project.

Upon her departure, Princess Margriet cast off the mooring lines, after which the ship departed on a cruise on the Nieuwe Maas during the evening show of the World Port Days.
