Sailing to climate summit COP30

Why fly when you can also sail? Flotilla4Change is facilitating a sailing flotilla to climate conference COP30, in support of sustainable travel and indigenous defenders of the earth.

Whether you are an elected member of government, an NGO delegate, or a frontline activist, you are welcome aboard the flotilla that will cross the Atlantic in early October 2025. The journey will take three to four weeks to arrive at the Conference of the Parties (COP30), part of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The conference will be held in Belem, Brazil, in November 2025.
Some boats will stay in Belem for the duration of the summit and will offer accommodation on board.

Stages

Flotilla4Change has launched an online community platform where anyone participating in the trip, or contributing to the project, can connect and strategise for this climate summit. Several yachts are taking part in the flotilla. The trip is divided into a number of stages. On each leg, the organisers do their best to stimulate and maintain the climate awareness of the participants before, at and after the conference, with group discussions and actions. Thus, the trip also provides opportunities to expand and strengthen one’s own network.

A journey in three stages

Phase 1 – Outward journey
On the outbound journey, we will develop strategies for COP30. We will have a mix of delegates and activists on board, to encourage public education and cross-pollination of ideas and strategies.

Phase 2 – COP30 in Belem
In Belem, many of our ships used for the Atlantic crossing will be available as “AirB&B”-like facilities and COP sites. It is likely that our ships will be anchored in the river. F4C will provide a water taxi service for early risers and night owls.

Phase 3 – Return voyage
On the return journey, we will focus on reflection through conversations, arts and culture, facilitated engagement and how to support societal attitudes towards political change. The actions, concepts and ideas from the first two phases will have time to disseminate and solidify as we return by sailboat via the Caribbean and the Azores.

Vision

This project promotes and connects sustainability, intercontinental travel, activism and a revolution in how we can work, live and travel together. We are creating a pioneering and inspiring example of how to travel to global climate summits and how to engage the most relevant but often excluded communities in these conversations.

Flotilla4Change goes beyond plotting a sustainable route across the Atlantic to the UNFCCC COP 30 in Brazil. Our journey promotes the integration of sustainable travel and intersectional communities to support a diverse range of voices that need to be heard during climate negotiations.

Our impact at COP30: We are bringing together key stakeholders in a new and groundbreaking situation available nowhere else but on a ship, mid-ocean.
