Thalassa back again from School at Sea ocean voyage

Time flew by, but for family and friends, who waited expectantly for the Thalassa, it could not go fast enough. On 13 April, the three-masted barkentine returned to Den Helder with 30 students.

The students made the trip as part of the 6-month School at Sea programme. The trip takes them from the Netherlands to the Caribbean Sea, calling at various islands and ports. The ship then returns to the Netherlands via Bermuda and the Azores. Students are accompanied by experienced teachers during the trip.

Time for reflection

A few days before their festive arrival, the pupils were already back on Dutch soil. In Den Helder, they were given rest and space for a last moment of reflection, something we do regularly during the trip. They reminisced about their unforgettable trip and reflected on new learning and development goals for home. But there was also plenty of time to end the adventure together and enjoy the last days together, with the crew and, of course, with the Thalassa, their faithful companion at sea.

Fries

After the long-awaited reunion with friends and family, with lots of hugs and tears, it was time for speeches and words of thanks. To make the return even more festive, a chip stand had been arranged where everyone could get delicious freshly baked chips. They had secretly missed those a bit 😉 And so the trip really did come to an end. It was time to pick up the threads of everyday life and return home. Now back to school, with a few more months to go. Let’s all have a quick blast and then hup over to the next school year.

Start preparing in time

A trip with School at Sea starts long before you board. The costs are not small (almost 30,000 euros per pupil), so extensive fundraising precedes. This allows ample time to work on your personal development and raise the necessary money without stress. The next fundraising training starts as early as the beginning of May. Marijn, one of our enthusiastic participants who wants to get on board this year, has already attended the training:“I notice that my attitude has changed. For instance, I used to find it very difficult (exciting) to approach people and then just ask for sponsorship. Now I find it easier to approach people and think: just do it and see what happens. And if nothing comes of it, I just move on, without letting it get me down.I have also learned that something works differently for everyone. You achieve the most with activities that suit you. Keep going with your actions and don’t hesitate to approach companies yourself. It isthe personal approach that really makes the difference for me.”School at Sea’s next trip on the Thalassa starts in October. The trip is already fully subscribed, new applicants will be put on a waiting list. For more information: email School at Sea.
