Researchers from around the world are invited to apply. Proposals should support the charitable aims of Sail Training International, including but not limited to the following objectives:

  • To demonstrate the short- and long-term effectiveness of a sail training programme or intervention;
  • To improve the development and implementation of sail training programmes to improve trainees’ personal, social or educational development outcomes;
  • Improve the capacity to develop positive international links between sail training participants;
  • Improve the development and understanding of maritime heritage;
  • Demonstrate replicable models of innovation and good practice in sail training;
  • Improve sustainable management and outcomes of sail training programmes;
  • Encourage effective partnerships between sail training providers and other agencies/partners/organisations working with young people in the long term;
  • Identify new and innovative outcomes of sail training programmes;
  • Provide credible evidence of how outcomes of sail training programmes have been achieved;
  • Support a better understanding of the impact of sail training activities on the environment (and/or ways to reduce the impact).

Murray Henstock, Sail Training International Trustee, emphasises the importance of research to the development of sail training: “Research is vital to the ongoing development of sail training. It informs our practice, shows our strengths and weaknesses, provides empirical evidence of our results, identifies new results and shows where these results can be strengthened and improved.”
“Sail Training International is committed to supporting and developing the valuable contribution that research makes. Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity to announce that Sail Training International has again made the research fund of up to £10,000 available for good research on sail training and related adventure learning around the world.”
“We hope this financial support will contribute to the growth of validated research available to our members, which can then be used to develop, promote and support our programmes.”
