Captain Arctic, ready for the Arctic

Whilst progress in the freight sector is still somewhat slow, it appears that the luxury charter sector is firmly committed to eco-friendly new vessels. This is particularly the case for voyages in sensitive areas.

Polar vessel launched

Construction of the Captain Arctic is progressing at the Chantier naval de l’océan Indien (CNOI) in Port Louis, Mauritius, where the polar expedition vessel has now been launched. The hull was manufactured by Goltens in Dubai before being launched. The key phases of system integration have been completed, particularly those relating to the batteries, the propulsion system and the wing sails.

The shipyard must now finalise the outfitting and prepare for sea trials, before the vessel is expected to enter service at the end of this year. These are the final stages at the shipyard before the vessel begins commercial operations in Norway at the end of the year. The hull was built by Goltens in Dubai before being launched.

Designed for discoveries of the unknown

Captain Arctic is a ship with impressive sails, powered by both wind and sun. The ship’s focus is on its quiet operation and the fact that it produces 90 per cent fewer emissions than most ships in the region. Due to its relatively small size – 70 metres long, with just 36 passengers and 24 crew members on board – there are no fixed routes, no mass-market standard experiences, and biodiversity is respected even more.  Thanks to a reinforced hull designed to navigate polar regions, and the latest generation of electronics, the Captain Arctic can sail through ice, reach remote and even uncharted areas, and bring you closer to the wilderness.
