Construction of largest sailing freighter now progressing rapidly

At the RMK Marine yard near Istanbul, the contours of the largest modern sailing freighter to date are becoming visible: the 136-metre-long, 5000 DWT Neoliner Origin.

By now, 100% of the steel has been cut and segments are rapidly becoming ready to be welded together.

The Neoliner Origin, which will be launched in January 2025 and commissioned in mid-2025, opens a new era for maritime transport. This RoRo vessel will be able to carry oversized cargo and up to 12 passengers. It will depart from Saint-Nazaire to Baltimore, with stopovers in Saint-Pierre and Miquelon and Halifax (CAN).

The Solid Sail rigging of 3,000 m², made by Chantiers de l’Atlantique, is now ready for installation.

The vessel may well run entirely on wind power, but due to the fixed liner service, it will also have a 3184 kW hybrid drive provided by Berg Propulsion. The aim is to sail at least 80% on average on wind energy.

This first Neonliner ship is intended to be a pilot project. From 2030, series of derivative ships should come into service and eventually even larger ships.
