New module Astro Navigation on the ENC

Enkhuizen Nautical College is expanding its educational offer with an astro navigation module. For those with a KZV* knowledge certificate (or equivalent), there is an opportunity to join the already existing lessons in Great Sailing.

The module covers 55 hours, spread over the months of October-March on (13/14) Saturdays and (4/5) Fridays. The first lessons will start on October 26.
The module will be taught in English by Eef Willems.

Components:

  • Course and distance calculation: mean latitude, meridional parts and great circle methods.
  • Altitude corrections of the sextant
  • Sun’s meridian passage and declination
  • Time calculation
  • Compass check and Azimuth calculation
  • The Hour Angle of the sun and stars
  • Latitude by Polaris
  • Sight reduction sun and star sight
  • Drawing of plot and advancing lines of position
  • Tabular sight reduction with HO249 for star sights
  • Tropical sun sight
  • Navigational Error Theory
  • Moon and Planets
  • Tidal calculations worldwide

The module includes textbook and exercise book. If desired, examinations in the subjects Astronavigation and Naval Numeracy can be taken in March.
