WASP

Where is the fleet?

Velic Consulting is maintaining a database of wind propelled and wind assisted vessels and has uploaded their data as a fleet on Marinetraffic. At least a nice pastime for the summer-break, and maybe more.

Velic Consulting, a small firm based in Lorient in France is providing maritime consultancy and specializes on wind propulsion. They have build and maintain a database of all modern and classic WASP ships currently in operation and they have made it available on a Google Drive share.

But even more exciting, at least in your editors opinion: they have uploaded it as a fleet to their Marin traffic account. Now we monitor in real time where al those admirable, innovative vessels are right now. Well, real-time…. not always. As Velic writes: “We don’t (yet) have the satellite option”. That requires an expensive subscription. So positions of vessels out of coastal AIS range could be a few days behind or even invisible.

In fact they created 2 fleets, displayed on separated maps for ships build before 2000 (mainly classic sailing vessels) and after 2000 (modern WASP), knowing both types have their own fanbase.

See it in action here.

Kudos for Velic!
